‘Stop spreading false news,’ says Nawazuddin Siddiqui as he clarifies his views on the ban imposed on The Kerala Story

Despite wreaking havoc on the box office, Sudipto Sen’s directorial The Kerala Story is still a matter of much debate. While there are several states that are running the film tax-free, there are others who have imposed a ban on the same. Even the Supreme Court’s verdict against the ban has not made much difference as cinema halls are not running the movie in such states. After Anurag Kashyap lent his support to the film, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has also spoken about it but in a diplomatic way.

Adah Sharma led The Kerala Story raises the question of love jihad, conversions and indoctrination. While many have supported the film, Nawazuddin had said that if a film is ‘hurting someone, then it is wrong’. Nawazuddin while reacting to a tweet by Anurag apparently supporting the film had told an online portal, “If a novel or a film is hurting someone, then that is wrong. We don’t make films to hurt the audience or their sentiments.” The actor said that films should promote social harmony and not divide the society. He had said, “Humein iss dunia ko jodna hai todna nahin (we have to unite this world not divide it).” Anurag had tweeted earlier this month and written, “You agree with the film or not, be it propaganda, counter-propaganda, offensive or not, to ban it is just wrong.”

However, Nawazuddin received a lot of flak for his statements and today took to Twitter to clarify his stance on banning films. He wrote, “Please stop spreading false news just to get some views and hits, it’s called cheap TRP - I never said and I would never want any film to be banned ever. STOP BANNING FILMS. STOP SPREADING FAKE NEWS !!! (sic)”

The Kerala Story also stars Sonia Balani, Yogita Bihani and Siddhi Idnani. It  is bankrolled by Sunshine Pictures Private Limited, founded by Vipul Amrutlal Shah who is the Producer, Creative Director and the co-writer of the film, and is also co-produced by Aashin A Shah. The Kerala Story has crossed Rs 200 crore mark at the box office and is still going strong.
