Jaane Jaan Review: Kareena Kapoor Khan's nuanced performance in Sujoy Ghosh's thriller is a delight, Jaideep Ahlawat takes the top prize!

Film: Jaane Jaan
Cast: Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma
Directed by: Sujoy Ghosh
OTT: Netflix
Rating: 3 moons

Kareena Kapoor Khan's OTT debut film, Jaane Jaan is out on Netflix. Starring Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma, the thriller is directed by Sujoy Ghosh. The film follows a story of Mrs D’Souza (Kareena) who is a mother of a  13 year old girl Tara. A woman who established herself after not so smooth past but is now living to her best until an incident changes everything. Jaideep plays a role of Naren, a mathematics teacher and the neighbour of Mrs D Souza, and Vijay portrays the role of the inspector Karan Anand. What follows is a murder mystery, a simmering tension laden drama and chain of events - based on the the third novel of Keigo Higashino's Detective Galileo series, The Devotion of Suspect X. The prime characters end up in West Bengal's Kalimpong, but contrary to what it portrays, Sujoy's film is not a whodunnit!

Jaane Jaan, building much on hype, does falter to the expectations. But it's the actors who keep you intrigued. Kareena is in top form, showcasing wide range of emotions, and it's a joy to see Sujoy extract a nuanced performance from the star. Vijay's sincerity is well reflected in his part, and it's safe to say there is no role he can't play. But the cherry on the cake belongs to Jaideep. He is everything and more that you cannot imagine or fathom!

What lacks for the film is  its treatment and presentation. The flow is disruptive and uneven. That said, Sujoy makes a commendable attempt to present the thriller in the best way possible but couldn't escape a few bumps on the way. This is no Kahaani (2012), Sujoy's raut thriller film starring Vidya Balan, but one can safely say, his tryst with female fatale(s) is definitely worth watching!
