Karan Johar’s directorial Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is truly one of the most loved romantic dramas that has ever been made in Bollywood. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kajol, the film recently completed 25 years from its release and the magic of the film still continues.
KKHH follows a story of the best friends Rahul (Shah Rukh) and Anjali (Kajol) who separate after Rahul falls in love with Tia (Rani) as she is more of a popular girl and considered more ‘attractive’. Following which, he later falls in love with Anjali after she comes out of her Tom boy zone and meets him later in life years post Tia’s death.
In a recent interview, Karan admitted that his perceptions have changed over time and he won’t want to make any film that would have similar gender politics.
The filmmaker said, “He (Shah Rukh Khan) liked the hot girl (Rani Mukerji), and the best friend (Kajol), but just because she was not so-called hot he didn't love her. And when she became hot, he fell in love with her. It was like gender politics were all wrong.”
He further added, “Because, that was also me, just being impressionable by Hindi cinema, and not by the gender politics of the world. It was new to me.”
The filmmaker also agreed that the stalking is horrible thing which he thought was a part of romance in his initial days of entering the industry and didn’t assume it to have any negative impact as he included it in the film.
Directed by Karan, KKHH released on October 16, 1998 and also marked his debut as a filmmaker.
