The Kashmir Files to Kasoombo, Bollywood Goes Bold: Agenda-Driven Films Spark Conversation

Bollywood is known for its vibrant song-and-dance, epic romances, and larger-than-life heroes. However, a recent trend is seeing filmmakers taking on challenging themes to explore social and political issues. This change has sparked controversy as some of them like the movies being more serious, while others don't like them being "agenda-driven". Recently, films like "The Kerala Story" and "The Kashmir Files" had sparked controversy for their portrayal of sensitive social and political issues.

“The Kerala Story" sheds light on the forced conversion and radicalization of women into joining the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The film garnered strong reactions, with supporters praising its portrayal of a silenced narrative, while critics accused it of bias. Similarly, "The Kashmir Files," depicting the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the 1990s, caused a lot of controversy.  While some lauded as it brought a long-ignored tragedy to light, others questioned its historical accuracy and potential to cause communal tensions.

The upcoming film "Kasoombo" will soon be joining this conversation. This film talks about how Dadu Barot and the 51 brave souls from Adipur village saved the sacred Jain Temples from Alauddin Khilji. This film will delve into the importance of Sanatan Dharma, which is highly relevant in today's socio-political situation, where its role is being actively discussed. Sanatan Dharma, with its emphasis on tolerance, acceptance, and honesty, offers valuable guidance to those who follow. The relevance of such films is undeniable, especially when elections are here.  The color saffron, associated with Sanatan Dharma, holds great significance during this crucial time. Just like fire burns away impurities, the vibrant orange-yellow color, saffron represents letting go of material things to focus on a spiritual path.

Films that explore these themes spark important conversations and encourage introspection which is needed in today's polarized world. And such films with strong messages will naturally evoke passionate responses.  However, the ability to spark healthy debate and self-reflection is a sign of powerful storytelling. Ultimately, these "agenda-driven" films, whether we agree with their message or not, are pushing boundaries and forcing us to confront important issues which is the vital role for any art form.
