Shyam Benegal’s ‘Manthan’ set for re-release in Indian theatres following Cannes success

Following its tremendous reception at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the Film Heritage Foundation announced on Monday that ticket bookings are now open for the re-release of Shyam Benegal's iconic film ‘Manthan’ in Indian theatres.

The restored version of the 1976 film, financed by 500,000 Gujarat farmers who each donated Rs 2 to fund the project 48 years ago, was showcased in the Cannes Classics segment on May 17. The film will re-release in theatres on June 1 and 2 across 38 cities in India, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Anand, Rajkot, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Chandigarh.

The news was shared by the X page of the Film Heritage Foundation, stating, “Here's the list of the PVR-INOX Cinemas showcasing FHF's restoration of Shyam Benegal's landmark film 'Manthan' (1976) produced by 500,000 farmers!!”

Starring Smita Patil, ‘Manthan’ is inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien's revolutionary milk cooperative movement, which transformed India into one of the world's largest milk producers and established the billion-dollar brand Amul. The film was co-written by Shyam Benegal and renowned playwright Vijay Tendulkar.

The title ‘Manthan’ evokes the organisation of an entire village around the creation of a dairy cooperative, highlighting the collective effort and social impact of the movement.
