Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s celebrated series, "Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar," has been officially renewed for a second season. The announcement came via a video release on Netflix's official Instagram page, thrilling fans of the historical drama. The first season, which premiered on May 1, featured an ensemble cast including Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, and Taha Shah Badussha.
The renewal of "Heeramandi" was announced in grand style at an event on Carter Road in Mumbai. A flash mob of 100 dancers, adorned in sparkling anarkalis and ghungroos, captivated attendees with performances of songs from the series.
In an interview with Variety, Bhansali provided a glimpse into the storyline for the upcoming season. “In Heeramandi 2, the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the Partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs.”
Expressing his gratitude for the series' success, Bhansali stated, “I'm blessed by the love and appreciation for ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.’ It's been a joy to see the show resonate with audiences worldwide, and I couldn't have asked for a better partner than Netflix. I’m happy to announce that we’ll be back with season 2!”
Monika Shergill, Vice-President of Content at Netflix India, also shared her excitement: “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has intricately woven magic to bring ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ to life. Watching audiences everywhere fall in love with this series — making it truly their own as a cultural phenomenon — has been hugely energizing and it thrills me to share that we will be back with Season 2.”
"Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar" has captivated viewers with its rich storytelling and vibrant depiction of historical Lahore. As anticipation builds for the next season, fans can look forward to a continuation of the dramatic and poignant journeys of the women who navigate the changing landscape of post-Partition India.
