Karnataka Government temporarily bans screening of Annu Kapoor's Hamare Baarah amidst controversy

The Karnataka government has issued a temporary ban on the screening of the Hindi movie 'Hamare Baarah' for at least two weeks following objections from several Muslim organizations. The government's order halts the release of the film and its trailer across all media platforms, including electronic media, social media, film theatres, private television channels, and other outlets.

The objections from Muslim organizations suggest that the film deliberately targets their religion, disturbs societal peace, and hurts the sentiments of Muslims. The groups have also challenged the certificate given by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), seeking its revocation, which would prevent the film from being screened in public.

The ban aims to prevent any potential religious discord and maintain communal harmony in the state.

'Hamare Baarah' revolves around the story of Manzoor Ali Khan Sanjari, who, despite losing his first wife during childbirth, continues to have more children with his second wife, now pregnant with her sixth child. When doctors warn that the pregnancy risks her life, Khan refuses an abortion. His daughter Alfiya, determined to save her stepmother, takes her father to court to demand an abortion. The film explores whether Alfiya can convince her father and the court, questioning the entrenched patriarchy in their society.

The film features an ensemble cast including Annu Kapoor, Ashwini Kalsekar, Manoj Joshi, Abhimanyu Singh, Parth Samthaan, Paritosh Tripathi, Aditi Bhatpahri, and Ishlin Prasad. 'Hamare Baarah' is jointly produced by Ravi S Gupta, Birender Bhagat, and Sanjay Nagpal, with Trilok Nath Prasad as co-producer and Kamal Chandra as director. The screenplay is penned by Rajan Agarwal.

As the controversy unfolds, the film's release remains in limbo, pending further review by authorities and potential legal proceedings.
