He's known as the global superstar. The bahubali of pan-Indian cinema, Prabhas has women drooling over him. A renowned name down South, he gained worldwide acclaim with the humongous success of SS Rajamouli's Bahubali franchise which positioned him as a bankable star even in the Hindi market. However, after the box office riot in 2015 and 2017, Prabhas failed to recreate the magic with his other pan-India projects.
Despite the projects being mounted on grand scales with all commercial aspects in place, the audience refused to accept him in romantic and action roles. From Saaho to Radhe Shyam and the highly anticipated Adipurush, Prabhas' towering screen presence barely benefitted the films at the ticket counter. Today, amid excitement and buzz, the makers of his upcoming film, Kalki 2898 AD, are launching the trailer. Will this big-budget dystopian thriller revive Prabhas' long-lost charm? Will Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone's global approach prove to be the lucky charm for him?
Well, only time shall tell whether Kalki 2898 AD will bring Prabhas back to the A-lister league. Till then, let's study the box office reports of his previous pan-India releases.
Saaho
Right after Bahubali, Prabhas returned to the big screen with the ambitious actioner, Saaho. Shraddha Kapoor was his leading lady. Despite the global appeal and the freshly attained superstardom, the film failed to click at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs. 350 crores, it struggled to touch Rs.400 crores.
Radhe Shyam
Fans were excited to see Prabhas in an out-and-out romantic role. Radhe Shyam, a period drama, presented the superstar in a completely different light. However, the audience rejected the film on the first day itself. Radhe Shyam, co-starring Pooja Hegde, was mounted on a budget of approximately Rs. 200 to Rs. 350 crores. The box office collection didn't even break even. It reportedly collected around Rs. 250 to 300 crores.
Adipurush
Adipurush has been termed as one of the biggest disasters in the history of Indian cinema. Based on the Hindu epic, Ramayan, the Om Raut directorial was panned critically and commercially for its poor storytelling and shabby presentation. The estimated budget is Rs. 500 crores to Rs. 700 crores. After taking a decent opening, the film minted around Rs.300 crores at the box office.
Salaar
Salaar did perform well worldwide. The Prashanth Neel directorial minted Rs. 715 crores on a Rs. 270 crores budget. However, speaking of the Hindi market, this film also failed to work. Clashing with Dunki, Salaar reportedly collected around Rs. 75 crores with its Hindi dub version.
It will be interesting to see whether Kalki 2898 puts Prabhas back in the top position.
