Kangana Ranaut calls for normalization of workaholics amid new controversy

Despite her new role as a parliamentarian, Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut continues to stir controversy with her recent remarks. Days after being involved in a "slap row," Ranaut has called for the normalization of workaholism to aid the country’s development.

Kangana shared her views on Instagram, posting a clip from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first address to PMO staffers. In his speech, Modi emphasized a vision for a developed India by 2047, stating, “Together we have just one goal – Nation First. Just one intention – 2047 Viksit Bharat. I have said this publicly, my every moment is for the country. I have also promised the country – 24/7 for 2047.”

Echoing the Prime Minister’s sentiment, Mandi MP Kangana wrote, “We need to normalize obsessive work culture and stop with the waiting for the weekends and crib about Monday’s memes. That’s all Western brainwashing. We are not a developed nation yet and we can’t afford to be bored and lazy at all.”

These remarks come shortly after an incident at Chandigarh airport, where Kangana was allegedly slapped by a CISF woman constable. The constable claimed her actions were in response to Ranaut's previous statement about women joining the farmers’ protest for Rs 100. In a video, the constable, Kaur, was heard saying, “She had stated that women have joined the farm protests for Rs 100. Was she there? My mother was sitting there.”

The incident sparked polarized reactions, prompting Kangana to address her defenders on X, where she tweeted, “Every rapist, murderer or thief always has a strong emotional, physical, psychological or financial reason to commit a crime. No crime ever happens without a reason, yet they are convicted and sentenced to jail. If you are aligned with the criminal’s strong emotional impulse to commit a crime violating all laws of the land.” Critics responded by highlighting her past social media support for Hollywood actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.

With current discussions in India focusing on poor working conditions and the need for a work-life balance, it remains to be seen how Kangana’s call to normalize workaholics will be received.
