In 2007, Shootout At Lokhandwala became a major talking point due to its gripping plot, ensemble cast, gritty execution, and memorable music. The film's success at the box office prompted producer Sanjay Gupta to develop a sequel, Shootout At Wadala, released in 2013 and also directed by Gupta. Since then, there has been much speculation about a third installment in the series. In a recent exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the veteran filmmaker shared intriguing updates on the status of Shootout 3.
Sanjay Gupta revealed, “We are still working on its script. We wrote an entire script during the lockdown but then realized we didn’t want to go down that road. The genre of Mumbai crime in the 90s has become saturated. The Excel show, Bambai Meri Jaan, is also based in the same zone. Ab hum log kitna Dawood aur Chhota Rajan ka story karenge?”
He added, “Hence, we went back to the drawing board and sat down with the writer’s team. Now, we are contemplating setting the story outside of Mumbai. So, Shootout 3 will be about some shootout that took place in another part of the country.”
Gupta explained that while Mumbaikars are often fascinated by the underworld, audiences in other regions, like the North, do not share the same level of interest since they haven't experienced such times firsthand. This regional difference has commercial implications for the Shootout series.
“Exactly. Both the Shootout films did not fare as well in Punjab as they did in Mumbai. Both films were hits, and yet, 60% of their revenue came from Maharashtra. Now, someone residing in Amritsar or Bathinda, usko kya malum Lokhandwala ya Wadala kya hai ya kahan hai? Hence, that is also the idea that we make it more appealing to a larger audience. When the story takes place in the heartland, then it becomes relatable to everybody,” Gupta explained.
As Shootout 3 continues to develop, fans can look forward to a fresh narrative set in a new location, aiming to broaden the appeal and reach of the popular crime series.
