The epic tale of Ramayana has held a special place in the hearts of millions, with Ramanand Sagar’s 1987 television series remaining one of the most beloved adaptations. Recently, Amrit Sagar, grandson of Ramanand Sagar, discussed the enduring legacy of Ramayana and shared his thoughts on Nitesh Tiwari's highly anticipated adaptation featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Amrit Sagar expressed his views on the new Ramayana, which stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita. He emphasized that Ramayana is a universal story that should be told by many, stating, “Nobody has a copyright on Ramayan.”
However, Sagar stressed the importance of approaching the story with authenticity. He cautioned against altering the traditional narrative with personal perspectives, insisting that the story of Ram should be told as it has been for centuries. “Ramayan is not that. It is the story of Ram, that is why it is titled Ramayan,” Sagar explained, underscoring that Ramleelas across the country have faithfully followed the story for generations.
Reflecting on his childhood experiences on his grandfather’s set, Sagar shared that he witnessed the creation of a cultural phenomenon. He believes that any new adaptation should adhere closely to the original text, comparing attempts to modify the story to “trying to change the Bible.” He stated, “It’s sacrilege. You don’t do that kind of stuff. Follow the text according to how it’s been written and then try and do your honest work in that given space. You can’t hurt the sentiments of so many people, that’s wrong.”
Nitesh Tiwari's adaptation, which is being produced by DNEG, is a two-part movie featuring an ensemble cast that includes Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, KGF star Yash as Ravana, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. This mega-budget project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, and anticipation is high for its release.
As the new version of Ramayana takes shape, fans of the epic story hope that it will honor the traditional narrative while bringing a fresh perspective to the beloved tale.
