Sonu Nigam on singing for Junaid Khan's debut film ‘Maharaj’: ‘Anything related to YRF is special to me'

Legendary playback singer Sonu Nigam, renowned for hits like 'Sandese Aate Hain,' 'Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin,' and 'You Are My Sonia,' has once again mesmerized audiences with his latest song, 'Achutham Keshavam,' from the film ‘Maharaj’, featuring Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan.

In an interview with IANS, Nigam shared his experience of recording the devotional track for Junaid’s debut. He expressed his gratitude for his longstanding relationship with Yash Raj Films (YRF), stating, "I truly value that I had this personal equation with Yash (Chopra) ji. Anything related to YRF is special to me."

Discussing the significance of the song, Nigam added, "I'm so glad that 'Achutham Keshavam' happened for ‘Maharaj’. Singing for Aamir's son's debut and my friend Siddharth Malhotra's directorial venture made it all the more memorable."

Nigam’s collaboration with Aamir Khan is not new. He previously lent his voice to Khan’s 2022 film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, singing tracks like 'Main Ki Karaan?' and 'Kahaani.' Their past projects also include films like ‘Fanaa’ and ‘3 Idiots’, where Nigam sang popular songs such as 'Mere Haath Mein,' 'Dekho Na,' 'Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe,' and 'Zoobi Doobi.'

Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, ‘Maharaj’ features Junaid Khan in the lead role as Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer championing women’s rights in the pre-independence era. Set in 1862, the film revolves around the Maharaj Libel Case.

The film premiered on Netflix on June 21st, following a clean chit from the Gujarat Court. Its release had been delayed due to objections from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which took issue with the film’s poster allegedly portraying a Hindu religious leader negatively. The organization demanded a pre-release screening of the film.

Produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner, ‘Maharaj’ also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharvari Wagh, and Shalini Pandey.
