Director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat defends criticism of violent scenes in Kill: 'Criticizing its violence is like criticizing a horror film for scaring people'

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, the director of the much-anticipated film Kill, recently addressed the criticism surrounding the film's high level of violence. In an interview with Indianexpress.com, Nagesh defended the film by emphasizing its genre-specific nature. He likened the criticism of the film's violence to criticizing a horror movie for being scary.

"Kill is a genre film," Bhat explained. "It’s an extremely violent film, so if it gets criticized for violence, it’s almost like a horror film being criticized for scaring people. As a filmmaker, I am always willing to experiment and push myself and my craft. If someone criticizes it with a valid reason, I will definitely take learning points from the criticism."

Nagsh also highlighted the film's positive reception both internationally and domestically. Kill premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, where it garnered significant praise. "It’s one thing to find a good response outside the country, but when your own people shower praise and love, it’s a very different feeling. It’s a feeling of validation and immense satisfaction,” Bhat stated. He mentioned that director Anurag Kashyap had called Kill the country's best film, adding to the film's accolades.

Kill, starring Lakshya, Ashish Vidyarthi, Raghav Juyal, and Tanya Maniktala, is set to release in cinemas on July 5th.
