Nita Ambani recently made a significant gesture by flying to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi last month to offer the first wedding invitation for her son Anant Ambani and his fiancée Radhika Merchant to the Lord. During her visit on June 24th, she also indulged in shopping for Banarasi sarees, underscoring her intention to bring the traditional garment to global prominence through the upcoming grand wedding.
The pre-wedding celebrations hosted by the billionaire Ambani family have already set high expectations for the wedding, which is anticipated to be one of the most extravagant events in the industry. Utilizing this high-profile occasion, Nita Ambani aims to spotlight the exquisite craftsmanship of Banarasi sarees and support the artisans behind them.
According to a report by India Today, Nita Ambani, Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, has purchased around 50-60 Banarasi sarees for the wedding. She also held meetings with local weavers in Varanasi to finalize the intricate details of the sarees, ensuring that the traditional craftsmanship received due recognition. The bulk order of these sarees has been completed, although specific details remain confidential.
This initiative is expected to significantly benefit the local craftsmen by bringing their work to an international audience. Praveen Agarwal, a sari trader and exporter, highlighted the impact of this move, stating, "When the Banarasi saree is worn at the Ambani family's wedding, it will once again be talked about worldwide."
The Ambanis recently hosted an intimate pre-wedding event on July 8th, attended by close friends from the industry. Celebrities such as Salman Khan and Ranveer Singh added star power, while Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, and others dazzled in their traditional attire. Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant are set to tie the knot on July 12th, followed by a lavish reception.
