The release of Honey Trehan's directorial venture, 'Punjab '95', has hit a roadblock as it encounters resistance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, which delves into the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra during the Punjab insurgency of 1984-1994, stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role. Recently screened by the CBFC, the film was met with demands for a staggering 85 cuts. Despite complying with these edits, sources indicate that the board remains hesitant to grant it a release certificate.

An insider revealed to Mid-day, "The filmmakers agreed to the 85 cuts, but the CBFC expressed concerns about the film's sensitive subject matter and questioned its suitability for release in the current climate. A final decision is yet to be made."

'Punjab '95', previously titled 'Ghallughara', has previously faced challenges with the censor board. In December 2022, the film underwent a prolonged certification process, resulting in demands for 21 cuts and a title change. This led to a legal challenge by Ronnie Screwvala's production house in the Bombay High Court, ultimately leading to its withdrawal from the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival lineup.

Despite the hurdles and uncertainties, a cast member affirmed the team's determination to release the film. "The movie might be heavily edited, but the team is determined to get it out there," the actor stated. "Right now, we're fighting for its very existence." However, plans for the film's release remain undisclosed.

Another source suggested that producers have been advised against releasing the film due to its exploration of Khalra's death, a sensitive topic involving allegations against Punjab police officials. "The CBFC is unlikely to approve it due to its potentially volatile content," the source claimed. "There are concerns that the film's portrayal of Khalra's custodial death could incite violence, necessitating a drastic overhaul of the narrative for its release."

Set against the backdrop of 1990s Amritsar, 'Punjab '95' narrates Jaswant Singh Khalra's journey from a bank employee to a prominent human rights activist, uncovering dark truths amidst personal risks. Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala's production banner in association with MacGuffin Pictures, the film also stars Arjun Rampal and Surinder Vicky in significant roles.
