Abhay Deol, is known for his versatile roles in films like Dev D and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, recently shared his thoughts on sexuality and masculinity in an interview with The Dirty Magazine. When asked about his sexuality, Deol refused to categorize it, stating, "It's not something that can be defined."
The actor, who has consistently chosen roles that challenge stereotypes, elaborated on his views while discussing his comeback film Bun Tikki, directed by non-binary, openly queer filmmaker Faraz Arif Ansari. Deol explained, "I see sexuality as a spectrum. I refuse the Western way of identifying sexuality because it's so black and white. The Eastern approach is so different; it recognizes the whole of us. I don't define my sexuality, and for me, it's not something that I think can be defined."
Abhay further added, "In my opinion, we are all they/them. It's more for the other person's comfort, so they can put you in a box. Why should I define myself in Western terms? I have embraced all experiences in my life and continue to do so. All of us have a masculine and feminine within us, so we are all they/them."
Addressing the concept of masculinity, Abhay shared, "I see masculinity as the ability to make people feel safe and included. As a man, I feel like a protector and provider, but I would happily give up my sense of taking charge and leading to a woman if she wanted to take charge and lead."
Despite his candid insights, Abhay emphasized that he is not "hiding" but prefers spending time at his home in Goa and has been spending a significant amount of time in Los Angeles over the past nine years, where he enjoys anonymity.
Abhay Deol will soon be seen alongside Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman, and Lin Laishram in Bun Tikki.
