Ranbir Kapoor reveals why Rishi Kapoor wasn't a 'Good Director': 'He doesn’t have the temperament'

Ranbir Kapoor, who started his film career as an assistant director, has shared candid insights about his experience working on his father Rishi Kapoor's 1999 directorial debut, Aa Ab Laut Chalein. Speaking on Nikhil Kamath's podcast, People by WTF, Ranbir revealed his honest assessment of the project and his father's directorial skills.

“I did a little bit of assisting on a film called Aa Ab Laut Chalein, which didn’t work,” Ranbir admitted. “My father directed that film. I realized that my father is a terrific actor, but he’s not that good a director because he doesn’t have a temperament. He’s short-tempered.”

Ranbir went on to explain the challenges of directing, stating, “It’s a selfless job because you’re doing everyone’s job, but giving them the credit for it. You are the boss on set, and any decision is your decision. Like they’ll come to you, even for a color or lensing or lighting or performance, everything’s up to you. So it’s kind of like you’re playing God in a way. So anyway, my father wasn’t cut out for that.”

This sentiment echoes a comment made by actor Akshaye Khanna on Simi Garewal’s chat show, Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, in the early 2000s. When asked about Rishi Kapoor’s opinion that Khanna had an attitude problem, Akshaye responded with humour, “So does he (laughs).” He added, “Oh yeah, he has a major attitude problem. But he is such a great guy and I loved working with him; the whole family, they are such wonderful people.”

Aa Ab Laut Chalein was Rishi Kapoor’s final directorial venture, produced under the legendary Raj Kapoor's RK Studios. Despite the film’s lack of success, it remains a significant part of the Kapoor family legacy.

As for Ranbir Kapoor, he is gearing up for his next big roles in Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of Ramayana and the upcoming film Love & War.
