Hungama filmmaker Priyadarshan and writer Rumy Jafry team up for a modern comedy spin

Reputable writer Rumy Jafry and veteran director Priyadarshan are collaborating on a new Bollywood comedy that attempts to reinvent the genre. Jafry broke the happy news in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, emphasizing that this movie will give comedy a modern spin.

Jafry, who made his recent directorial debut with the thriller Chehre starring Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi, shared that this collaboration with Priyadarshan marks a new chapter in his career. “I am doing a couple of projects as a writer. I am doing one comedy, but it is very fresh and in tune with today’s times and that too with Priyadarshan. I had never worked with Priyadarshan before; he makes such good comedies. I am also planning to direct another film” Jafry said. He added that the movie's casting process has not yet started.

Priyadarshan’s previous Hindi film, Hungama 2, released in 2021, was followed by several ventures in the cinema business of South India. Jafry made his directorial debut with the 2021 film Chehre, in which he also declared his intention to keep experimenting with other genres.

Jafry explained his discerning approach to choosing projects, emphasizing the importance of innovation. “I have become quite selective in recent years,” he stated. “In our industry, if a writer excels in one genre, he is made to write the same type of films. I won’t name those films, but a lot of comedies have flopped in recent times one after the other because people are not ready to change themselves. And I am not ready to write the same things again. There has to be something new and fresh for me to take. That’s why I am selective as I feel it is important to upgrade yourself,” said Jafry.

“I do something if I feel it’s different. Like, I directed the film Chehre with Amitabh Bachchan. I had never done a thriller, so I felt like making one.” He continued.
