Ram Gopal Varma on current state of Indian Cinema: “Hollywood makes Oppenheimer, Bollywood make Thugs of Hindostan”

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has often shared his opinion about movies, cinema and filmmaking while he has even been vocal about politics and society. He has also sparked controversies for his tweets expressing his opinion publicly. In a recent interview, the director opened up on the current situation of Indian Cinema where Bollywood movies are struggling to perform well at the box office. The south vs north debate has always been a subject of discussion but this time RGV has renewed the Hollywood vs Bollywood comparison. 

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Ram Gopal Varma talking about cinema said Hollywood makes Oppenheimer while Bollywood makes Thugs of Hindostan. He was asked why it is common for Hollywood filmmakers to be consistent even in their old age despite changing landscapes, to this Ram replied, “When you talk about Scorsese, or when you talk about Clint Eastwood, the kind of realism and effectiveness… They’re taking up (interesting) subjects, and getting performances that are top-notch. More than anything else, it is their personal attitude which is reflecting in their films.”

He continued, “First of all, we don’t make such films. We think of the audiences as dumb. Basically, the kind of cinema they make, and the benchmark there… Imagine what is the benchmark here. All the big (Hollywood) stars come together and make Oppenheimer. And here, all the big stars come together and they make Thugs of Hindostan.”

The director known for his unconventional filmmaking style, Ram Gopal Varma has often spoken about cinema. Apart from his controversial remarks, he has also backed the projects of other filmmakers supporting and praising  The Kashmir Files, HanuMan, Animal, Kalki 2898 AD, and more. 

Ram Gopal Varma has delivered some of the best films Indian cinema has ever had. He has directed iconic movies like  Satya, Rangeela, Satya, Kaun, Jungle, Company, Bhoot, Sarkar, Rakta Charitra 1, and Rakya Charitra 2.
