Anurag Kashyap slams Bollywood but appreciates Kill and Laapataa Ladies, “They focus on big stars than story”

Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is popularly known for vocalizing his opinion. He is never ashamed of expressing his thoughts which has often sparked controversies. In the past, the director has often spoken about Indian cinema highlighting filmmaking style in Bollywood and South movies. Recently he once again made a comment on the same subject saying the Hindi films focus on star power rather than a real story.

In an interview with The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap opened up on the filmmaking style of Bollywood and South. He even shared why southern films are performing better than Bollywood. He said, “In Bollywood, they would fill these roles with big stars, focusing on star power rather than telling a real story.”

He further mentioned that Bollywood often falls into the trap of repeating formulas for a movie but sometimes even goes out of the set format to explore the content and as a result does wonders. With this, he praised 12th Fail and Laapataa Ladies which weren’t mainstream films but performed amazingly garnering audience love. Taking about 12th Fail and Laapataa Ladies, Anurag said, “It only works when something original comes out.” 

The filmmaker further hailed the recently released actioner which is touted to be the most violent film in Indian Cinema. He said, “Kill is an action movie but still very unique in itself.” In another interview with Humans of Cinema, he slammed Bollywood for wasting money in the name of making a film but a lot of money is used for the entourage. He said, “A lot of money that is spent doesn’t go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia, it goes into the entourage.”

On the work front, Anurag Kashyap was last seen exploring his acting skills in the Tamil film Maharaja with Vijay Sethupathi and Bad Cop with Gulshan Devaiah. As a director, his last film Kennedy premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
