Phir Aayi Hasseen Dilruba: Taapsee Pannu recalls not being ‘Ideal Choice’ for Rani in Haseen Dilruba

Taapsee Pannu is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Phir Aayi Hasseen Dilruba a sequel to her mystery romance thriller Haseen Dilruba. She will reprise her role as Rani however she was not originally meant for the character. Before she got on board of 2021 released Netflix Haseen Dilruba, writer Kanika Dhillon had locked another actor for the titular role of Rani. The actress herself revealed that she was more excited about the project learning that initially she was not the ideal choice but later the grey traits suited her characteristics to rope in for such a role.

In an interview, Taapsee recalled "I had heard from Kanika that she has a story of this sort. I had told Kanika that I was keen to hear it, but I went to shoot a film and when I returned, I learned that she had already narrated the film to some other actor and they were proceeding to lock things soon." Months later Taapsee was contacted by Kanika Dhillon for the same project, the writer invited her to the office and started narrating the story without asking her any questions. The actress added, "When she finished the narration, I just laughed. I told her, 'Ye meri kismat mein thi (I was meant to do this film), I had told you before.' It was an immediate yes from me."

She continued, “I am not the ideal cast for it, apart from the grey part of it. Because anything grey, that is not right on paper, I am the go-to person. Apart from that, nothing was suiting my casting in the film. That was probably why I was excited because then I would approach it in a way that won’t be expected or be the most ideal way of doing it. When I do it, it will be different than someone who is ideally perfect for a role like this. I thought this would be a great opportunity to test myself and I discovered so much more about what I can potentially do.”

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dilruba is a continuational sequel of Haseen Dilruba. The second chapter stars Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, Sunny Kaushal, and Jimmy Shergill. The film written by Kanika Dhillon co-produced by Colour Yellow Productions and T-Series Films is set to stream on Netflix from August 9, 2024.
