Mallika Sherawat claims media backlash for calling Indian society ‘Regressive for Women’

Mallika Sherawat’s controversial 2013 statement about India's gender issues has resurfaced on social media drawing renewed attention in light of recent nationwide protests. In a press meet over decade ago, Sherawat described India as “regressive” country for women. She cited high-profile rape cases. She pointed out widespread female foeticide and infanticide.

The resurfaced video from event promoting Indian reality show The Bachelorette India shows Sherawat addressing a journalist’s question about the regressive nature of Indian society. She said, “With female foeticide and infanticide happening almost daily, with gang rapes making the headlines of every newspaper… Today I read in the paper, according to UNFPA, 40 percent of Indian women are married below the age of 18, I think it is a very, very regressive state for women. And I stand by it.”

Mallika took to Instagram to defend statement revealing that she faced significant backlash at time. She wrote, “I still can’t forget this moment when I was attacked & bullied by a certain section of the Indian press for speaking out against gang rapes and sexual violence in India.” She criticized some women in the press. Bollywood actresses joined the response of those who attacked her for outspoken views.

Mallika Sherawat’s comments have been revisited. This follows tragic death of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Allegations of rape and murder have sparked widespread protests. Doctors across India are demanding justice for victim.

Mallika Sherawat has used resurfacing of her old statement to highlight ongoing issues of sexual violence. She emphasizes the need for public figures to support rather than silence, those who speak out against such injustices.
