Tanushree Dutta criticizes justice K Hema committee report, slams ineffectiveness of harassment prevention measures

Tanushree Dutta known for her strong attitude against sexual harassment in the film industry has expressed her discontent with the recent findings of the Justice K Hema Committee regarding sexual harassment cases in Malayalam cinema. In a conversation with News 18 Dutta referred to the report as "useless" and elevated doubts about the effectiveness of committees like the Vishakha Committee that are tasked with stopping workplace harassment.

Tanushree stated frustration with the lack of action following these reports, “What’s the point of this new report anyway? All they had to do was arrest the accused and enforce a strong law and order system. The Vishakha Committee came up with numerous guidelines, but what happened after that? The names of the committees just keep changing.”

Dutta's critique follows a case that garnered attention due to the involvement of actor Dileep. He faced allegations related to an incident in 2017 where a female Malayalam actor was assaulted in Kochi. The investigation was begun at the request of the Women In Cinema Collective.

Drawing from her personal encounters Tanushree voiced her disapproval of individuals such as Nana Patekar whom she alleged to have harassed her in 2008 while filming Horn Ok Please. She has encountered negative reactions and scrutiny for sharing her story especially during the MeToo movement in India. Dutta highlighted her scepticism towards the system expressing, “These reports and committees seem to be wasting our time rather than doing the real work. Having a safe workplace is a basic right for anyone.”

The debate corresponds to the film industry which is trying to handle issues of harassment and the efficiency of measures designed to address it.
