Thalapathy Vijay Launches new political party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, Unveils flag and anthem

Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay on Thursday unveiled the flag of his newly founded political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), at the party headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai. Vijay gave a short speech after unveiling the yellow and red flag. The flag has a symbol of a Vagai flower surrounded by two ivory tusks and stars. During the Sangam period, Tamil kings used to wear garlands made of Vagai flowers as a symbol of victory.

In his speech, Vijay said, “Our flag will become the symbol of our state. Along with the flag, we are also presenting our party anthem. Our flag will fly all over the country and Tamil Nadu will be better from now on.” Party general secretary and former Puducherry MLA, Bussi Anand welcomed the gathering. Vijay's entry into politics will definitely change the current political equations of Tamil Nadu. Vijay is a star in himself and his fan club 'Vijay Makkal Ayyakam' has one million members.

The fan club was formed soon after his entry as a lead actor in the film 'Naalaiya Theerpu' (1992). Vijay Makkal Ayyakam is now registered as All India Thalapathi Vijay Makkal Ayyakam (AITVMI). Vijay has joined the list of Tamil stars who have made inroads in politics. These include actor MG Ramachandran (MGR), who founded the AIADMK and became one of the most popular chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, and Dr J Jayalalithaa. He also not only made a grand entry into politics but also registered his name in the list of powerful Chief Ministers of the state.

However, not all Tamil actors who join politics write success stories. For example, Sivaji Ganesan, Vijayakanth and Kamal Haasan were not that successful in Tamil Nadu politics. A living legend of the Tamil film industry, Rajinikanth had announced his political entry just before the 2016 assembly elections, but later backed out citing ill health. Vijay's party has shown its mettle in the local body elections. In the 2021 local body elections, AITVMI contested 169 seats and won 115 seats. Vijay is focusing on the 2026 assembly elections and has already announced that he will retire from films after the release of the much-awaited action thriller Gota in September.
