Vidhu Vinod Chopra opens up About his daughter’s battle with bipolar disorder, "My job was to take on her stress"

Acclaimed director Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently shared a touching story about his daughter Isha’s battle with bipolar disorder. In a conversation with the Times of India Vinod Chopra talked about the obstacles his family has encountered during this challenging journey and how they have come together to support Isha. Her book Finding Order in Disorder has struck a chord with people facing similar challenges.

Chopra confessed that he was taken aback when he first heard about his daughter’s diagnosis. Reflecting on that moment he shared, “When I heard my daughter was unwell, I was in disbelief. It was our family doctor, who has been an important figure in raising Isha, who diagnosed her with bipolar disorder.” He credited the doctor’s guidance for helping him understand that it was a condition they needed to confront as a family. “Thanks to his guidance, I understood that it’s a condition like any other, and we needed to fight it together.”

Chopra also reflected on the power of art in helping Isha manage her condition. “When Isha was in Pune, she had a good guru, and I realized that art can be a powerful tool. It engages the mind so deeply that it blocks out distractions.”

The filmmaker highlighted the importance of support from family members. "My job was to take on her stress. That’s the first thing the caretaker or family should do. Like the Samudra Manthan from mythology, the family must absorb the poison—take on the suffering of their loved one, hold it, and bear it."

Vidhu Vinod Chopras honesty about his daughters struggle with mental health has resonated with many, delivering a powerful message about the significance of support and resilience. In his recent work Chopra directed the film 12th Fail starring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr which received positive reviews from critics.
