In the most recent instalment of the documentary series Angry Young Men actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar candidly shared the inner struggles he went through amid his parent’s separation. Farhan reminisced about the emotions of "anger and betrayal" that washed over him when his father, the celebrated screenwriter Javed Akhtar departed from his mother Honey Irani and tied the knot with the esteemed actress Shabana Azmi.
Farhan openly talked about the difficulties he faced in adapting to the changes within his family, sharing that it took him a while to come to terms with his father’s new marriage. "There was a phase when I was angry with him. I felt betrayed. All those normal emotions a child goes through growing up," Farhan shared, reflecting on his tough past.
Zoya Akhtar, the sister of Farhan, shared her thoughts on the changes they went through. She mentioned that they spent more time with their mother after the separation but also recognized Shabana Azmi's role in bringing back a sense of normalcy to their lives. Zoya said, Shabana has had an influence in establishing that normal routine.
Javed Akhtar reflects on his divorce from Honey Irani in 1985 revealing his feelings of remorse regarding his part in their troubled relationship that began with their marriage in 1972. "I feel guilty towards Honey," Javed admitted, adding, "60 to 70% of the responsibility lies on my shoulders for the failure of that marriage."
