Kangana Ranaut criticizes Indira Gandhi's legacy, Claims her struggles were not genuine due to nepotism

Kangana Ranaut is all set for the release of her upcoming political thriller Emergency. The film is based on the dark era of Indian history when an Emergency was imposed from 1975 to 1977 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kangana Ranaut not only portrays the titular role of the former PM but also dons the director cap. She shared her opinion on Indira Gandhi explaining what she admires and criticizes about the national personality.

The actress spoke about how Indira Gandhi proved herself in a male-dominated political area despite having a privileged upbringing. She claimed Gandhi came from a nepotistic background but her determination was appreciative. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kangana who is bringing Indira Gandhi’s journey through her political career to cinema talks about her thoughts about the former Prime Minister.

Kangana said, “Yes, she was privileged, and she was coming from a nepotistic background. After all, she was the PM’s daughter. She held official positions during her father’s term. I mean, what more privilege can one get in politics? She was coming from a privileged space, but she had the determination that I have to prove myself. That determination was worth applauding.”

She further added, “The negative thing, someone’s manufactured struggle can’t be real. The fact that she didn’t face any natural struggle in her life and her dealing with it was not coming from a mature space, it still came from a space where she was thinking like the PM’s daughter. That was not a good thing. Because when you are in that chair, you need to be selfless. You can’t operate from a place of ego.”

The film highlights the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977 in India which was a turbulent time characterized by the suspension of civil liberties and the imprisonment of political opponents. Often considered a dark chapter in Indian history, this 21-month era saw extensive censorship, forced sterilizations, and authoritarian control under Gandhi’s administration.

Kangana Ranaut who essays the titular role of Indira Gandhi in Emergency has also directed the movie. The film stars a strong ensemble cast including Milind Soman, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhary, and Vishwak Nair. Co-produced by Kangana and Renu Pitti under the banners - Manikarnika Films and EaseMyTrip Emergency will open in cinemas on September 6.
