Dia Mirza recalls getting dropped from movies after her debut Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein flopped

Joining the trend of re-releases in Bollywood is R Madhavan and Dia Mirza’s Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein. The romantic drama has been re-released in theaters today after 23 years. The film is a classic hit among the audience despite it flopped at the box office when released originally in 2001. The timeless romance earned cult classic status over time. Dia Mirza recently recalled her struggle to sign new projects after her debut film RHTDM didn’t perform well.  

Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein introduced two talented actors R Madhavan and Dia Mirza to the world. Maddy who had already worked in Telugu cinema made his Bollywood debut with RHTDM a remake of his own movie. However, the film didn’t work well with the Hindi audience and Dia Mirza recently recalled how the team reacted when the movie tanked at the box office. In and interview with The Times of India, Dia Mirza said, "We were all devastated! I remember being dropped from many projects. However, the film’s popularity grew once it was screened on television and, many years later, got a further boost on social media"

She further spoke about how the film gained a cult status mentioning audience now shower love on the iconic movie. She said, "The film attained a cult status purely due to the extraordinary love the audience continues to give the film. It helped me discover how little box office matters to a film that genuinely connects with people. It's a gift that keeps giving."

For the unversed, Dia Mirza was just 19 years old while working on this movie which also happened to be her first. On the work front, Dia Mirza recently featured in web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack which released on Netflix on August 29. The thriller web series is based on true events when an Indian Airlines flight was hijacked en route Kathmandu-Delhi on Dec 24, 1999.
