Javed Akhtar criticises lack of major roles for Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, Cites societal confusion about modern women

Javed Akhtar is a big name in Hindi cinema. He has written the stories of many brilliant and classic films. He has given many wonderful films and evergreen songs to Hindi cinema. Javed, who talks about love through his pen, is also quite famous for expressing his views openly. Recently, during a conversation with Indian Express, the veteran writer cum lyricist has given a big statement. He said that despite being talented, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit did not get even a single big role.

Javed Akhtar and his daughter Zoya Akhtar have expressed their opinion about cinema and the style of storytelling on screen. During this, he also talked about the portrayal of female characters and contemporary society's understanding of women. He said, “The writer is a part of the society, who breathes the same air. That's how great characters are found." He clarified his point by giving examples of Meena Kumari in Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam, Nargis in Mother India and Waheeda Rehman in Guide. He said that problems arise when morality is not clear.

Referring to Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, he said that both were no less talented than any other actress. He said, "Look at these two girls, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. They were no less talented than any so-called heroine of their time, but did they get any big roles? The reason was not because someone was their enemy, but at that time, society was not clear about the contemporary woman." Javed further said that we are still trying to find a modern woman while wandering in the darkness.

The senior lyricist, as a proud father, revealed that his daughter requested him not to praise her. The lyricist said that Zoya gets a little embarrassed when her father praises her. During this, Javed said that only in Zoya's film has he got the opportunity to see a contemporary woman. Last month, in We Are Yuva's show Be A Man, Yaar, Javed had discussed in detail the portrayal of modern women in cinema. During this he had said that when a person pretends to be something he is not, it is an exaggeration.
