Kangana Ranaut reveals Emergency certification on hold due to death threats

Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated upcoming film Emergency got stuck with the Central Board of Certification as the movie certificate stalled a week before the release date scheduled for September 6, 2024. The actress has admitted that the political thriller has not received clearance from CBFC. Kangana who has backed the project clarified the delay in certification because of the threats to CBFC board members. She further claimed that her team is being pressured not to illustrate Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and other stories related to history.

Kangana Ranaut who directed Emergency and also plays the titular role of Indira Gandhi took to her Twitter handle to share a self-recorded video. She said, “There are certain rumors that my film 'Emergency' has been cleared by the censor board, but that's not true. In fact, our film was initially cleared, but the certification has been put on hold as the censor board is receiving death threats.”

She further talked about the pressure on her team to remove some scenes regarding the former Prime Minister’s assassination. “There is pressure being put on us to remove certain scenes, such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the Punjab riots, and more. Now, I don't know what else to show. What are we supposed to do—blackout the film during these scenes? This is unbelievable to me, and I am deeply sorry for the current state of thinking in this country,” she said.

This comes amid the reports of Emergency facing calls for a ban. The movie will certainly banned in Telangana where 18 delegatory Sikh Society members accused the film of depicting the community as terrorists and anti-nationals. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has confirmed Sikh community to consider banning Emergency release following a pending legal consultation. Kangana Ranaut has also received death threats from the extremist Sikh groups.
