Sonam Kapoor, a Bollywood actress is facing backlash on social media after a video of her speaking with an accent went viral. In the footage she talks about her summer getaways, high end fashion labels and haircare regimens but it’s her accent that has gathered the most scrutiny.
Many internet users voiced their dissatisfaction on Reddit, with some reminiscing about moments when her accent faced ridicule. Detractors have noted her pronunciation of words and speculated that her accent could be influenced by rumoured cosmetic surgeries. One commenter made a joke comparing her to India’s Minister, suggesting she might “get Indians banned from other countries with that accent.”
One commenter took issue with her accent while others pointed out variations in her speech attributing them to possible cosmetic enhancements. There were also remarks about how she pronounced Indian names with some people finding it concerning.
Sonam Kapoor is still active in the industry despite facing criticism online. Her most recent project was the 2023 crime thriller Blind which is a remake of a Korean film. She is also set to appear in an adaptation of Anuja Chauhan's novel Battle for Bittora. Kapoor made her entry into Bollywood with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya.
