Kangana Ranaut responds to Emergency release delay, says “I'll fight in court and release an uncut version”

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming political thriller Emergency has been embroiled in controversy for now. As it moved closer to the scheduled release of September 6 the film has been banned and won’t make it to the theaters on the said date. The film based on the historical event of 1977 emergency has been stalled due to the political representation of Indira Gandhi in the movie. Censor Board of Film Certification didn’t give a green signal after receiving death threats. Kangana Ranaut who headlines the film and also owns the director's credit reacted to the delay in the release.

On Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, the actor-filmmaker said, “Meri film pe hi Emergency lag gayi hai. Bahut hi nirashajanak ye sthiti hai. Main toh khair bahut hi zyada disappointed hu apne desh se, aur jo bhi haalaat hain.”

Kangana contended that she is being unfairly targeted, pointing out similar events shown in her film are already depicted in other movies. Noting down a few names she mentioned, Madhur Bhandarkar's 2017 political thriller Indu Sarkar (imposition of 1975 Emergency) and Meghna Gulzar's Sam Bahadur (1971 India-Pakistan War) last year. She mentioned although her film had initially received certification from CBFC, the certificate was further revoked after review due to several petitions.

However, Ranaut strongly affirms that such setbacks won’t stop her from making such movies, saying, “We'll keep telling those ridiculous stories otherwise. We'll get scared by someone today, someone else tomorrow. People will keep scaring us because we get scared so easily. How much will we keep getting scared? I've made this film with a lot of self-respect which is why the CBFC can't point out any contention. They've stalled my certificate, but I'm determined to release an uncut version of the film. I'll fight in court and release an uncut version. I can't show all of a sudden that Indira Gandhi died on her own at her home. I can't show it like that.”
