Here’s how Kangana Ranaut bagged Gangster after almost losing it

Kangana Ranaut is a well-known name in the industry and she has earned that prestige alone. The actress who made her debut with Gangster at the age of 19 left people spellbound with her acting prowess. The actor-filmmaker who is busy prompting her upcoming political thriller Emergency revealed that she almost lost her role in her first movie. She mentioned that Chitrangada Singh was approached to play the lead role alongside Emraan Hashmi and Shiney Ahuja. 

The Queen actress shared that she was finalized after clearing the audition round. However, she was later rejected because Mahesh Bhatt that she was too young for such a demanding character. The director wasn’t confident about her and Chitrangada Singh was contacted but due to her unavailability, the role fell into Kangana’s kitty marking her entrance into Bollywood. Well, had Chitrangada Singh available, Gangster wouldn’t be the same as what Kangana delivered adding her magic and allure to the movie. She also won Filmfare, IIFA and other awards as best debutant.    

In an interview with Lallantop, Kangana Ranaut recalled how she got her debut movie - Gangster: A Love Story. She said, "Anurag Basu had made the hit film Murder (2004) before Gangster. He was looking for a new actress for his new film, and I was giving a lot of auditions at that time. I went to their studio located in Juhu for the audition. Anurag was also there, and he told me that he had received my photos. Then he asked me to do a few things. First, he asked me to do a drunk scene. After that, he asked me to show how I cried. Then, he asked me to say a couple of dialogues. I did what was told and was sent home after that."

She went on to add, “A few days later, I got a call from Anurag and was told that I had been finalised. Then after a few days, Anurag called me and told me, 'You have lost the role'. He said that Mahesh Bhatt Saab is not agreeing as he thinks that you are too young for this role. Anurag even said that Chitrangada has been cast for my role. But then Chitrangada, for whatever reasons, was not picking up the phone so the role ended up in my bag.”

Kangana Ranaut is currently gearing up for Emergency a biographical political thriller centered around the dark phase of Indian history. The film highlights on the 1977 emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
