PIL filed in Delhi High Court seeks ban on Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

On Monday a Public Interest Litigation PIL was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to prohibit the OTT show IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The petition argues that the series distorts facts and misrepresents the true identities of the hijackers of the 1999 Indian Airlines flight. It contends that the show incorrectly depicts the hijackers with Hindu names like Bhola and Shankar which are respected as alternate names for Lord Shiva offending the sentiments of the Hindu community.

Surjit Singh Yadav, the head of Hindu Sena, has lodged a petition requesting the annulment of the Central Board of Film Certifications (CBFC) approval for a miniseries. He advocates for stopping the public showing of it claiming that misrepresentations of history could lead to misunderstandings and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. In response to the ongoing controversy, the government has summoned the content head of Netflix India to address the allegations concerning the series. Representatives from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting have voiced apprehensions regarding the depiction of the hijackers emphasizing that no one should interfere with feelings.

The release of IC: 814 The Kandahar Hijack on Netflix India directed by Anubhav Sinha on August 29 has ignited intense discussions regarding its portrayal of the 1999 hijacking carried out by the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Harkat ul Mujahideen.
