IC 814 Controversy: Pankaj Kapur reacts to Hijacker code name debate, Netflix issues official statement

The Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack which debuted on August 29 garnered reviews after its release. However shortly after its launch a controversy emerged regarding the use of code names for the hijackers in the show. Some viewers expressed worries that the names might cause confusion regarding the terrorist’s community affiliation. While many internet users supported the series arguing that the code names were accurate and even featured on the Ministry of External Affairs website the discussion continued to intensify.

In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama while promoting his new movie Binny And Family veteran actor Pankaj Kapur who plays the role of Vijaybhan Sinha the Minister of External Affairs in the show shared his thoughts on the controversy surrounding it. When questioned about the negative reactions Kapur shrugged it off saying, “You don’t need to react to these things. Some people have the time and will always find something to object to. They may even have valid points, and I respect that. But if you look at the series logically, there’s nothing offensive. The director and writers did their best to present a fictional, history-based project close to reality.”

Pankaj further commented that while the controversy might eventually weaken, it could benefit the show, laughing as he said, “Controversies are also good for a show. It keeps it alive longer.” He added, “We don’t want to offend anyone. If there are concerns, let’s sit down and have a conversation like educated people and sort it out.”

In response to the growing debate, Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content at Netflix India, released an official statement on September 3. Shergill clarified that the series had been updated with an opening disclaimer to reflect both the real and code names of the hijackers, emphasizing that the names used were historically accurate. “India has a rich culture of storytelling — and we are committed to showcasing these stories and their authentic representation,” she stated.

Despite the controversy surrounding it IC 814 The Kandahar Hijack continues to capture attention and spark conversations among its audience.
