Kangana Ranaut reacts to Bombay High Court decision on Emergency

Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated movie Emergency which was slated to release on September 6, 2024, has been stalled by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film is getting entangled in hurdles to receive a green light after a section of society protested against the movie demanding a ban and suggesting a few cuts over the historical events of Indira Gandhi. Now Bombay High Court has also raised hands to intervene in the certification process. The court’s decision follows an earlier directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which had previously ordered the Central Board of Film Certification to thoroughly consider the objections raised against the film before approval.

Reacting to Bombay High Court's order, Kangana Ranaut took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote, “Today I have become everyone’s favourite target, this is the price you pay for awakening this sleeping nation, they don’t know what I am talking about they have no clue why I am so concerned, because they want peace, they don’t want to take sides. High court has blasted censor for illegally withholding the certificate of #emergency.”
According to NDTV reports a bench comprising Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla emphasized that issuing orders would conflict with the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s instructions. The bench observed, “Judicial propriety prevents us from passing any orders today, as it would contradict the standing directive from another high court.” The Bombay High Court, however highlighted that the CBFC should reach a decision by September 13 after carefully examining the objections.

Emergency is a political thriller based on the dark phase of Indian history of 1977 emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sikh communities objected that the film distorted historical facts and portrayed certain groups in a negative light. The film earlier slated to hit theaters on September 6, now awaits a release.
