Nawazuddin Siddiqui reflects on initial reaction to Gangs of Wasseypur: ‘Ye Kya Bana Diya Hai Yaar?’

Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently disclosed during an ANI podcast that he had a negative impression of the rough edit of Anurag Kashyap's iconic film Gangs of Wasseypur. Even though his portrayal in the movie received critical acclaim Siddiqui admitted that his initial response to viewing the version was, "Ye kya bana diya hai yaar?" It was only when the movie debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 that he fully grasped its genius coming to a realization, "Tab muje realise hua ki Anurag aise he thodi Anurag hai."

In a recent podcast interview Siddiqui shared his thoughts on the making of Gangs of Wasseypur when asked if he sensed they were creating something special he admitted he didn’t. He explained that it’s challenging to assess a films impact during the production process even after completing the project he remained uncertain about its success. However, witnessing the final cut at Cannes shifted his perspective. Siddiqui also praised Anurag Kashyap calling him a genius who has transformed Indian cinema and achieved global recognition while feeling that Kashyap is still undervalued in India.

Released in the Directors Fortnight at Cannes Gangs of Wasseypur is considered a masterpiece of Indian cinema. This two-part movie tells the story of a coal mafia family’s rise in the town of Wasseypur Jharkhand. It boasts an impressive cast including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Manoj Bajpayee, Pankaj Tripathi, Richa Chadda, Huma Qureshi and Tigmanshu Dhulia. The films received acclaim for their captivating storytelling and raw authenticity with critics praising Kashyap's artistic vision.

In terms of his career Nawazuddin Siddiqui is preparing for the release of his film Adbhut. He stars in the movie alongside Diana Penty, Shreya Dhanwanthary and Rohan Mehra. Produced by Sony Pictures International Productions and Sabbir Khan Films, Adbhut delves into the blending of reality with elements. After Adbhut Siddiqui has a roster of projects in the pipeline including Oil Kumar, which draws inspiration from ganglord Benakanahalli Alappa Shivakumar as well as the forthcoming films Noorani Chehra and Sangeen.
