Deepika Padukone, a prominent Bollywood actress faced criticism for opting not to wear a mangalsutra when she visited the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai with her husband, Ranveer Singh. In expectation of the birth of their first child, the couple travelled to the temple on September 6 to ask for blessings before Ganesh Chaturthi. Deepika's decision to skip the traditional sparked debate on social media.
The actress received criticism from several individuals on X (formerly known as Twitter) who challenged her choice to deviate from this customary representation. One user mocked her for it, "She must be so poor that she can’t even afford a simple mangalsutra," while another wrote, “Forget the mangalsutra, she can’t even afford sindoor.”
In spite of the backlash Deepika’s supporters swiftly rallied to defend her highlighting that donning a mangalsutra is a matter of preference rather than an obligation even when attending temples. One fan remarked, "Mangalsutra isn’t even a compulsory thing in many Hindu cultures. If you can’t fathom the diversity of Hindu culture, you should just stfu. She is decently dressed, which is all that matters."
Another user supported the point saying, “Where is it written that one has to wear a mangalsutra when visiting the temple? It’s an individual choice… following or not, it’s a personal decision!”
Deepika has dealt with this kind of criticism before. In the past people have scrutinized her for her pregnancy and fashion choices like wearing heels. Nevertheless, her fans consistently stand up against the negativity reminding everyone that she doesn't owe anything to her detractors.
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh recently welcomed their baby girl and shared the joyous news with their fans on Instagram. Posted a sweet message saying "Welcome Baby Girl! 8.9.2024. Deepika & Ranveer" accompanied by an image featuring a golden bow.
