Sukesh Motwani, Co-Founder, Chief Creative Officer, and Director of Bodhitree Multimedia, is a seasoned storyteller with over 25 years in the entertainment industry. As Bodhitree Multimedia is back with anouther new TV show Gudiya Rani on Dangal TV, we delve into his journey, industry insights, and the vision behind their latest project.
How has your journey in the entertainment industry been, and how did it all begin?
It’s been a true joy, and I anticipate it will always remain so. The essence of storytelling—characters and narratives that resonate with the audience—has been a constant source of inspiration for me. While the formats and techniques have evolved, the core value of compelling storytelling remains unchanged. Our passion for TV and storytelling has been a driving force, allowing us to stay creatively engaged and expand into OTT, producing diverse content in this new space.
What changes have you observed in the industry over the years?
There’s been a noticeable shift towards a growth-driven focus, which has introduced greater precision and technical expertise in storytelling. However, it’s crucial to balance this with passion and intuition. While a scientific approach can enhance storytelling, the essence and honesty derived from a genuine love for the craft are equally important. I’m optimistic that this balance will continue to drive content that deeply connects with audiences.
What type of content do you believe is essential for the current generation?
Today’s generation is influenced by social media and has a shorter attention span. Content should reflect societal truths and promote values like compassion and tolerance. It’s important to integrate morals and values into content, especially for the younger audience. Even though times have changed economically, our storytelling should focus on success beyond materialism and uphold enduring values.
Which genre have you enjoyed working on the most?
I’ve always been drawn to mystery and thriller genres. The OTT space offers significant potential for these genres, and I believe we need more of them. With women increasingly leading content creation, blending this upliftment with mystery and thrillers could be explosive. Shows like Star Trek, Stranger Things, and X-Files have room to grow in our market, and I look forward to seeing India produce more exceptional content in these areas.
What inspired you to start Bodhitree Multimedia?
For me, storytelling is about more than just entertainment; it’s about fostering evolution. Our aim has always been to subtly address positive change through our content, helping to build a more accepting and self-aware society. We strive to create stories that integrate compassion and understanding, contributing to a more positive world.
How do you differentiate between producing content for TV and OTT platforms?
TV is a communal experience, where content is consumed by families or groups of friends. For shows like Gudiya Rani, we focus on high drama that appeals to a collective audience while ensuring authenticity. OTT offers a more personal experience, allowing for exploration of complex and edgy stories. It’s a platform where characters can be more layered and situations more nuanced, providing a deeper connection with viewers.
What are your future plans for content creation?
We believe in experimentation and are eager to produce a variety of content that challenges our storytelling abilities and aligns with our ethos. We’re exploring new opportunities on both TV and OTT that push creative boundaries and resonate with our audience.
Do you think audiences are less invested in longer formats now? How do you view this as a creator?
I don’t believe that quality content can be overlooked, regardless of its length. A well-crafted story with nuanced characters can succeed in both short and long formats. Good content will always find its audience.
