Squid Game, A Korean drama thriller web show is one of the most popular series among the audience worldwide. It is a dystopian survival thriller where contestants participate in a game eyeing a prize but the stakes are deadly. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and streaming platform Netflix have been sued by Indian filmmaker Sohum Shah over copyright infringement. He claimed that Squid Game makers have ripped off his 2009 Hindi film Luck.
Squid Game starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, Anupam Tripathi, and Gong Yoo, is under a lawsuit over violation. According to reports by the American portal TMZ, filmmaker Sohum Shah has accused the Netflix series of copying his 2009 film Luck. The Lawsuit states that the the game show franchise was allegedly created on the plotline from the movie Luck. Netflix has now reacted on the matter stating it holds no merit.
Sohum Shah claimed that the Luck story is about people trying their luck by playing deadly games to win a jackpot, and the prize money keeps increasing whenever any player dies. Similarly, in Netflix’s Squid Game, the contestants too play risky games and losing the game is at cost of their life. Here as well the prize money keeps rising. Sohum Shah mentioned that he wrote the story of Luck in 2006 and released in 2009 whereas Squid Game was written in 2009 while it released worldwide in 2021.
Netflix has denied the allegation by Sohum Shah of ripping off his film starring Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Shruti Haasan. A Netflix spokesperson stated, "This claim has no merit. Squid Game was created by and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and we intend to defend this matter vigorously."
Squid Game is set for season 2 expected to release in a few months exclusively on Netflix. The second season of the survival thriller game show is scheduled for December 26, 2024.
