“Tortured” Kangana Ranaut strongly states “Bhindranwale is a terrorist” amid delay in Emergency release

Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of her political thriller Emergency. The film initially scheduled to release on September 6, faced the wrath of social activists stalling it a few days ahead of the release. It is still awaiting the green light after being banned over censorship issues. Sikh protestors have opposed the film claiming it negatively portrays their community. While some urged the makers to delete a few scenes about Indira Gandhi.

Emergency highlights the dark phase of Indian political history during 1975-1977 when an emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During a News18 event in New Delhi, Kangana stated that Indian history has been hidden deliberately. She argued only a few people are raising objections over her film and stated Bhindranwale was a terrorist not a saint.

She was quoted saying, “It is our history which has been intentionally hidden. We are not told about this. Bhale logo ka zamaana nahi hai. My film is ready to be released. It has received certification from the censor board. 4 historians supervised our films. We have the proper documents. There is nothing wrong with my film. But some people call Bhindranwale a saint, revolutionary or a leader. They threatened via pleas. I have also received threats. Previous governments have declared Khalistanis as terrorists. He was not a saint who was sitting in a temple with an AK47.”
Kangana further added, “Only some people have an objection to my film, they are also inciting others. I don’t think 99 per cent of the people of Punjab consider Bhindranwale a saint. He is a terrorist and if he is a terrorist, my film should be released.

The postponement of Emergency release has also caused financial loss to Kangana Ranaut who has directed and produced the movie. Talking about the same she said, “Till when will we continue to play safe? I do not think like this. I never thought people will have an objection to Bhindranwale being shown as a terrorist. I am being tortured. It is so embarrassing for me. We also faced losses. My movie was cancelled just 4 days back.”

In Emergency, Kangana portrays the formidable Indira Gandhi, India’s late Prime Minister, during one of the country’s most turbulent periods. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the film is awaiting a theatrical release.
