Kangana Ranaut known for her bold and outspoken nature has revealed that her first directorial project Emergency is facing significant obstacles related to censorship without any support from the film industry, political parties or the opposition. In an interview with News18 Kangana claimed that while the government normally protects movies from censorship problems her film has not received the same support.
Kangana, plays the role of Indira Gandhi, expressed, "There have been films like Padmaavat and Udta Punjab that faced threats, but were eventually released smoothly with government support. However, when it came to Emergency, neither the Congress party nor the film industry extended any support. I feel completely isolated."
She emphasized the need for artistic freedom and the right to tell stories without censorship. The controversy surrounding the film’s release highlights the ongoing debate between creative expression and cultural sensitivity Kangana is still optimistic that the problems will be fixed and the film will be released at some point, "The film industry is celebrating the fact that my self-financed project didn't release. I feel like I'm in the loneliest corner of the world."
Few people in the industry have commented on the situation among them is director and lyricist Varun Grover, who is notable for being one of the few to voice his displeasure with Emergency's postponement. He referred to the situation as ironic.
This situation reminds me of instances of censorship in Bollywood. In 2016 the film Udta Punjab starring Alia Bhatt, Shahid Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh faced protests for allegedly depicting Punjab in a light although it eventually got released. Similarly, Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Padmaavat faced backlash from groups like the Shri Rajput Karni Sena leading to threats and delays before its successful box office release. While both Padmaavat and Udta Punjab managed to overcome these obstacles with support from the government and the film industry Kangana's Emergency is still struggling to obtain its certification.
