Bollywood is once again experiencing a rough patch at the box office. While a handful of movies are performing phenomenally others are struggling to collect decent BO numbers. Sanjay Gupta, who directed films such as Kante and Shoot at Lokhandwala, echoed the probable reasons for movies underperformance. He claims there are multiple factors that has led to the downfall of theatrical response. Sanjay believes one of the major grounds of the decline is the lack of good filmmakers. 

Currently, Stree 2 has performed stupendously at the box office shattering several box office records set by highest grosser movies. On the other hand, Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein released on the same day at Stree 2 experienced a low run and failed to stand strong. Another latest release The Buckingham Murders is also witnessing low collection at the box office. Meanwhile, Tumbbad which re-released in theaters has performed phenomenally. 

In an interview with India Today, Sanjay Gupta said “There are multiple factors that contribute to these numbers. Simply put, one goes to watch a movie in a theatre to experience something that’s larger than life which teleports them into another world. Today, to reach anywhere in a city like Mumbai or anywhere else in India, there’s traffic, construction work and what not going on. If one is dealing with all of this and going to a cinema hall with their friends and family, they really want to enjoy this movie-watching experience after taking so much effort to get to the theatre in the first place.” 

He went on to add, “After all of this, if they are presented with something that’s not good, then the number of people going to cinema halls is certainly going to decrease. Also, theatres today are empty because there are not many good filmmakers out there bringing out new and great content like old times.”

Sanjay Gupta recently directed Visfot featuring Riteish Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan, Priya Bapat, Krystal D’Souza, and Sheeba Chaddha. The action thriller is a remake of the Venezuelan film Rock, Paper, Scissors.
