Karan Johar addresses “Log kya kahenge, samaaj kya kahega” reaction over becoming a single parent through surrogacy

Karan Johar is one of the filmmakers most talked about in the industry for his personal life as much as his professional life. Undoubtedly, KJo is a filmmaker with high popularity, and a massive fanbase and people are particularly interested in his life. People criticized and judged him when he became a single father to twins Roohi and Yash, whom he welcomed in 2017 through surrogacy. His decision to take up father duties alone was highly criticized even by industry personnel. However, he has often candidly opened up on such subjects addressing the challenges he faced.

Karan Johar has publicly spoken about his identity and as an individual, he extended his family by welcoming two kids through surrogacy. But this was not easy for him as people expressed concerns over his choice of becoming a single parent. In a recent interview with Jai Madaan – Lady of Fortune YouTube channel, he revealed many people showed concerns about societal norms and expectations on him and questioned his ability to raise children without a partner.

He said, “I never want to have regret, I do what I want to do. I live unapologetically. A lot of people have given me a lot of advice. When I decided to do Koffee with Karan, they told me I was making a mistake by over-exposing myself. They would say that a director should have some mystique, and that they should be behind the camera. I broke those myths.”
He mentioned, that people asked him “Are you sure? Log kya kahenge, samaaj kya kahega’. I said, ‘Why should I be bothered about what people say when I have my mother’s blessings?’ My mother was so supportive. She said immediately, ‘You want to have a child of your own without a partner, please go ahead. But make sure, because it’s a very big responsibility’. Watching someone grow up in front of you, and develop their own personalities, it’s a big deal.” Karan Johar often shares cute videos of his kids on social media. He spends great time with them as a parent performing two roles of a father and mother.

On the work front, Karan Johar is set to host a new game reality show The Traitors an official adaptation of the American show of the same name. He is also actively promoting Alia Bhatt’s upcoming film Jigra produced under the Dharma Productions banner in association with Eternal Sunshine Studios.
