In a recent interview, Karan Johar, the filmmaker, spoke about the strong connection he had with his father, Yash Johar, who was a renowned producer and the founder of Dharma Productions. Yash Johar sadly passed away in 2004 after fighting cancer. Karan candidly discussed the meaningful conversations they had during his father’s last year and also revealed his greatest regret.
Karan, who first directed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai back in 1998 just six years before his father’s passing shared that Yash Johar was someone who kept his emotions to himself and showed his true feelings. "He would never share what he was going through—his pain, his sufferings. But in that one year, I had several conversations. I am grateful to the universe that I had this opportunity," Karan mentioned during his chat with Jai Madaan.
The director pondered how the heartbreaking news of his cancer diagnosis allowed him to engage in meaningful discussions with his dad that probably wouldn't have taken place otherwise. "I was told he had only a year or 10 months. Because I had that time, I had several conversations with my father and shared things that were close to my heart," Karan expressed his appreciation for the chance to strengthen his relationship with his dad during those challenging times.
Karan also expressed his deepest regret that his father was not there to see the tremendous success of Dharma Productions following his passing. "The only regret I have is that he couldn’t see the kind of phase I went through after he left us in terms of Dharma Productions. The phase where he would have been so proud for the company, that he couldn’t see. This is the only regret I will always have," Karan concluded emotionally.
In terms of his career Karan Johars most recent directorial project Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt was a tremendous success. He is now looking forward to the debut of two films supported by Dharma Productions titled Devara and Jigra.
