Vivek Oberoi reflects on his 2009 controversial ' Our industry has more plastic' comment: 'I was immature’

Actor Vivek Oberoi recently spoke up about his controversial comment made in 2009 regarding the film industry where he stated, "Our industry has more plastic than the company that makes Tupperware boxes. The remark he made while being interviewed on Farah Khans show Tere Mere Beech Mein still lingers with him even after all these years. In a recent conversation with India TV the actor shared his remorse about the comment acknowledging that he was "immature" back then.

Vivek responded to the comment with a smile saying, "That’s not something to say out loud. They know who they are, and you know it, too. The way I made this remark back then, it’s been a while. Now, I’m older and more mature."

Reflecting on his past, the Saathiya actor elaborated on the pressures that lead some in the industry to adopt a "plastic" facade. He explained, "It’s up to an individual whether or not they want to be plastic. Some people become plastic because they fear being judged for their real selves. Others lack the strength to be real, or think that pretending is the only way to survive. But when you realize all this is a waste of time, you understand that being real is the ultimate satisfaction."

During a chat with Farah Khan in 2009 Vivek opened up about his conflicts and the infamous press conference where he made some serious accusations. Looking back on that moment he confessed that deep down he knew he shouldn't have gone ahead with it. "My inner voice told me to not do this and to go have a conversation man-to-man. But when you have too many people advising you, you suppress your own thoughts," he said.

He admitted that the repercussions from the press conference came quickly. "Soon after, the people who encouraged me to do it distanced themselves from me overnight. Now, I laugh at my immaturity, but back then, I was really stressed. I was young, 24, and in love, and many go crazy when in love," Vivek reflected.

The actor’s honest confession reveals how he has evolved through his journey in the entertainment world overcoming past missteps with a wiser outlook on both life and his profession.
