Laapataa Ladies selected as India's official entry to Oscars 2025, Kiran Rao expresses heartfelt gratitude

In a milestone for the Indian film industry Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies is set to be Indias representative at the 97th Academy Awards. The Film Federation of India (FFI) revealed this news designating the movie as the nation’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars scheduled for March 9, 2025.

The movie had its first showing at the Toronto International Film Festival and it weaves a touching and funny tale of two newlyweds who unfortunately lose their spouses while traveling by train. The amusing escapades that ensue are packed with humour, mix ups and a bit of disorder.

With a cast including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan in key roles Laapataa Ladies stands out as a refreshingly unique movie and a testament to Rao's directorial prowess. When asked about the potential for an Oscar nomination during an interview with PTI last week Kiran Rao expressed her aspirations saying. “My dream would be fulfilled if it was chosen to go to the Oscars. But it's a process, and I'm hoping Laapataa Ladies will be considered. I'm sure the best film will be selected.”

Kiran Rao’s statement on Laapataa Ladies Oscar entry, “I am deeply honored and beyond delighted that our film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India.”

She also thanked viewers for support to taking this journey ahead. “To the audience, your love and support mean the world to us, and it is your belief in this film that continues to inspire us as filmmakers to push creative boundaries. Thank you once again for this incredible honor. We look forward to taking this journey ahead with great enthusiasm.”

During an event in Chennai FFI President Ravi Kottarakara made the official announcement unveiling the jury members tasked with the selection process.

Enhancing the thrill Jyoti Deshpande, the President of Media and Content Business at Reliance Industries and a co producer of the movie expressed her delight. “Laapataa Ladies being selected as India's entry for the Oscars is a true testimony of our vision and commitment to 'Make in India and Show the World.' This film has already received immense love globally, and we will do everything in our power to make India proud on a global stage.”

The movie, brought to life by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and Jyoti Deshpande through Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Productions and Jio Studios is inspired by a tale that won accolades crafted by Biplab Goswami. The clever script and conversations are the work of Sneha Desai with extra lines contributed by Divyanidhi Sharma.

Although Indias attempt to secure a spot on the Oscars shortlist in 2018 fell short the countrys filmmaking talent shone through with RRR's Naatu Naatu winning the award for Best Original Song and The Elephant Whisperers taking home the prize for Best Documentary Short. The expectation now rests on Laapataa Ladies to uphold the legacy of Indian cinema at the global Oscars event. As India eagerly anticipates the outcome all eyes will be on March 9, 2025 when the winners are revealed during the prestigious ceremony.
