Kangana Ranut’s Upcoming political thriller Emergency has been stalled by CBFC just a few days before the scheduled release. The film is still struggling to receive the green signal to release after some social activist raised their protest. With an elongated stretched matter Bombay High Court jumped in asking for an explanation from CBFC and asked to release the case soon. The certification board has now recommended a few cuts before theatrical release.
Emergency highlighting the dark phase of Indian political history of 1975-1977 emergency era has been embroiled in controversy. Sikh organizations demanded a ban over the film stating that their community has been put in a negative light and it distorts historical facts. Kangana Ranaut accused CBFC of stalling the movie and Bombay High Court demanded a statement by September 25.
On September 26, the Central Board of Film Certification informed Bombay High Court that the upcoming film could revive its certification if specific cuts are made. CBFC recommended Emergency makers implement some cuts in the movie. CBFC's counsel, Abhinav Chandrachud, confirmed that, "The committee has suggested some cuts before the certificate can be issued and the movie can be released." Senior counsel Sharan Jagtiani, representing Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the co-producer of Emergency, requested time to decide whether the cuts would be accepted.
Emergency is a political thriller based on the dark phase of Indian history of 1977 emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sikh communities objected that the film distorted historical facts and portrayed certain groups in a negative light. The film earlier slated to hit theaters on September 6, now awaits a release.
Kangana Ranaut battling with the censor board over certification portrays former Prime Minster Indira Gandhi who imposed 1977 emergency. Not just acting she also directs and produces the project under her production company Manikarnika Films. Besides Ranaut, the film also stars, Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, and late Satish Kaushik among others.
