Subhash Ghai reveals composer AR Rahman and lyricist Anand Bakshi struggled to communicate while creating music for Taal

Taal featuring Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor, and Akshaye Khanna is one of the best films in Indian cinema. Directed by Subhash Ghai the film earned iconic tag and is still cherished by OG fans and cinephiles. It’s songs from Taal Se Taal Mila to Kahin Aag Lage continue to rule audience. The film music was a collaboration between AR Rahman and late lyricist Anand Bakshi. The director revealed that both faced difficulties commuting while working on the film. 

To celebrate 25 years of Taal, PVR is re-releasing the iconic movie in theaters on September 27. While Taal music is highly appreciated and loved, director Subhash Ghai shared that there was a communication gap between composer and songwriter, while Rahman didn’t know Hindi Anand Bakshi couldn’t speak English. 

Subhash Ghai addressed the challenges with Radio Nasha. He said, “When I first made Anand Bakshi and AR Rahman meet, Anand ji didn’t know English and Rahman didn’t know Hindi. I placed a harmonium between them, thinking there might be some jugalbandi. They asked each other, ‘No, you play something,’ ‘No, you play something.’ But after 15 minutes of silence, I realised there was a communication gap. One didn’t know English and the other didn’t know Hindi.”

Taal is a musical romance drama featuring a love triangle as Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna both love Aishwarya Rai while she is in dilemma and confused. It is a love story of class divide, a rich guy falls in love with Mansi, an aspiring singer who later tastes for fame with the help of popular music composer Vikrant. Taal released in 1999 was a commercial success in India and globally. Its time to rewatch the film theaters once again as it re-releases on September 27.
