Anubhav Sinha reflects on 'Ra One' failure: 'I was too starstruck by Shah Rukh Khan'

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has spoken openly about his film 'Ra One'. Shah Rukh Khan's superhero action film became very popular among the audience. However, the box office collection of the film was quite disappointing. Kareena Kapoor also shared screen space with Shah Rukh in the film and the songs of the film are still on people's lips. Now Anubhav Sinha has explained why the film could not do wonders at the box office.

The filmmaker said that Shah Rukh gave his best for 'Ra One', but perhaps he was too attracted to the star he was directing. During the Mashable India podcast with Mukesh Chhabra, Anubhav Sinha said that he recently met Shah Rukh and the topic of this film released in 2011 came up between them.

Anubhav Sinha said, 'I told him that I am so attracted to you and a director should not be attracted to his actor. I am from Varanasi. Sanjay Dutt was a star even before I came into films. While making 'Dus' I used to call him 'Sanju', then Shah Rukh became a star in front of me, he came to Mumbai almost at the same time as me. Then when he started becoming a star, I also became his fan.'

The director further said, 'By the time I worked with him, he was a big star and I always wondered how people could have access to a star like him? By then mobile phones had come and I messaged him one day that I have a story that can only be made with him. Dus had released it then and he might have liked it.'

Anubhav further said, “When the film received negative reviews in Diwali 2011, it became the target of malicious campaigns. The negativity started growing so fast that no one in the Hindi film industry was answering his phone calls. After 'Ra One', people stopped answering my calls. Everything ended. When it was released in 2011 it did a business of around Rs 150 crore, but the worst part was that I didn't know how to make a film. No one in Mumbai would answer my calls, I had no work. This went on for five-six years.”
